š Substrate Flow ā Applied Examples
Five flow scenarios. One per channel, plus atlas pull. Each runs the full pipeline.
Module: Substrate Flow Canonical ID: SF HSP Section: 08 Role: Applied flow examples
Example 1 ā S ā C Channel: Definition Refinement#
Scenario: A new term ("supsphere") is coined in the Symbolic substrate. An E1 structural echo carries it into the Cognitive substrate where it acquires meaning.
Flow Walkthrough#
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Echo Type | E1 (Structural) |
| Origin | S (Symbolic) |
| ESI | 1 (local) |
| Recursion | R1 (SāC ladder) |
| Drift | None |
| Family | F1 (stays low) |
SFāRoute:
- Primary channel: S ā C
- Direction: Upward
- Driver: ESIā1 + R1
- Atlas pull: No
SFāDrift:
- Drift active: No
- Shadow pressure: 0.0
SFāTag:
- Destination: C (Cognitive)
- Flow status: Stable
- Record: E1 echo, SāC, stable, no drift, no atlas pull
Canon Takeaway: S ā C is the most common flow. Most definitions follow this path once and stop. The channel is highāvolume, lowāenergy, and structurally predictable.
Example 2 ā C ā H Channel: Harmonic Oscillation#
Scenario: A concept ("resonance time") begins oscillating between the Cognitive and Harmonic substrates. An E2 harmonic echo sustains the oscillation through cycle recursion (R2).
Flow Walkthrough#
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Echo Type | E2 (Harmonic) |
| Origin | C (Cognitive) |
| ESI | 2 (mild) |
| Recursion | R2 (CāH cycle) |
| Drift | None |
| Family | F2 (stays harmonic) |
SFāRoute:
- Primary channel: C ā H
- Direction: Bidirectional
- Driver: R2 cycle recursion
- Atlas pull: No
SFāDrift:
- Drift active: No
- Shadow pressure: 0.0
SFāTag:
- Destination: Oscillating (C ā H)
- Flow status: Stable
- Record: E2 echo, CāH, stable oscillation, no drift
Canon Takeaway: C ā H is the only bidirectional channel. Harmonic echoes oscillate here indefinitely until the harmonic band shifts or external force pushes them into H ā So. This is the "resonance zone" of the flow map.
Example 3 ā H ā So Channel: Governance Torsion#
Scenario: A harmonic pattern formalizes into a governance structure. An E3 substrate echo crosses from Harmonic into Social, driven by map recursion (R3) and ESIā3 energy.
Flow Walkthrough#
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Echo Type | E3 (Substrate) |
| Origin | H (Harmonic) |
| ESI | 3 (crossāsubstrate) |
| Recursion | R3 (HāSo map) |
| Drift | D3 (H/So instability) ā mild |
| Family | F3 (migrates) |
SFāRoute:
- Primary channel: H ā So
- Direction: Upward
- Driver: R3 + ESIā3
- Atlas pull: No
SFāDrift:
- Drift active: Yes (D3)
- Current channel: H ā So
- Shadow pressure: 0.35
- Instability zone: Harmonic/Social boundary
SFāTag:
- Destination: So (Social)
- Flow status: Migrating (with mild drift)
- Record: E3 echo, HāSo, migrating, D3 active (0.35), no atlas pull
Canon Takeaway: H ā So is the governance torsion zone. When harmonic patterns become governance structures, the torsion creates mild drift (D3). This is normal ā the transition from resonance to structure always generates some instability.
Example 4 ā So ā A Channel: Atlas Forcing#
Scenario: A governance structure achieves fullāspectrum resonance across all five substrates. An E6 atlas echo forces it into the Atlas substrate via the So ā A channel.
Flow Walkthrough#
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Echo Type | E6 (Atlas) |
| Origin | So (Social) |
| ESI | 4 (atlas pull) |
| Recursion | R4 (SoāA atlas) |
| Drift | D4 (A instability) ā moderate |
| Family | F6 (anchors atlas) |
SFāRoute:
- Primary channel: So ā A
- Direction: Upward
- Driver: ESIā4 + R4 + F6
- Atlas pull: Yes (active)
SFāDrift:
- Drift active: Yes (D4)
- Current channel: So ā A
- Shadow pressure: 0.6
- Instability zone: Social/Atlas boundary
SFāTag:
- Destination: A (Atlas)
- Flow status: Forcing
- Record: E6 echo, SoāA, forcing, D4 active (0.6), atlas pull active
Canon Takeaway: So ā A is the highestāenergy channel. Atlas forcing reshapes the entire flow map ā once an echo enters Atlas, it becomes a permanent structural anchor. The moderate D4 drift is expected: atlas entry always creates temporary instability before stabilization.
Example 5 ā DriftāShadow Current: CrossāChannel Destabilization#
Scenario: An existing E3 substrate echo begins drifting. The drift generates an E5 driftāshadow echo that rides D3 current from H ā So, creating destabilizing shadow pressure.
Flow Walkthrough#
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Echo Type | E5 (DriftāShadow) |
| Origin | H (Harmonic) |
| ESI | 4 (atlas pull) |
| Recursion | R3 (HāSo map) |
| Drift | D3 (H/So instability) ā severe |
| Family | F5 (destabilizes) |
SFāRoute:
- Primary channel: H ā So (drift current)
- Secondary channel: So ā A (atlas pull engaged)
- Direction: Upward (accelerated by drift)
- Driver: D3 drift + ESIā4
- Atlas pull: Yes (ESIā4 + F5 cascade)
SFāDrift:
- Drift active: Yes (D3, severe)
- Current channel: H ā So ā A (cascading)
- Shadow pressure: 0.85
- Instability zone: Harmonic/Social + Social/Atlas
SFāTag:
- Destination: A (Atlas, via cascade)
- Flow status: Drifting
- Record: E5 echo, HāSoāA cascade, drifting, D3 severe (0.85), atlas pull active
Canon Takeaway: E5 driftāshadow echoes demonstrate cascading flow ā the drift current from one channel can push the echo through the next channel without independent driver activation. Shadow pressure above 0.7 indicates the echo is being carried by drift, not by its own energy. This is the flow signature of structural instability.
CrossāExample Comparison#
| Example | Echo | Channel | Driver | Drift | Atlas Pull | Flow Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | E1 | S ā C | ESIā1 + R1 | None | No | Stable |
| 2 | E2 | C ā H | R2 cycle | None | No | Stable |
| 3 | E3 | H ā So | R3 + ESIā3 | D3 (0.35) | No | Migrating |
| 4 | E6 | So ā A | ESIā4 + R4 + F6 | D4 (0.6) | Yes | Forcing |
| 5 | E5 | HāSoāA | D3 + ESIā4 | D3 (0.85) | Yes | Drifting |
Patterns#
-
Flow status escalates with channel height. SāC is stable; SoāA is forcing. The higher the channel, the more energy required and the more instability generated.
-
Drift activates at H ā So. The first three examples have no drift. Drift appears when echoes cross from Harmonic into Social ā the governance torsion zone.
-
Atlas pull requires ESIā4 or F6. Only the highestāenergy echoes experience atlas gravitational pull. This is a natural filter.
-
Cascading flow is a drift signature. Example 5 shows HāSoāA cascade ā a single drift current pushing through two channels. This only happens with E5 (driftāshadow) echoes.
-
Shadow pressure predicts stability risk. 0.0 = stable. 0.35 = mild instability. 0.6 = moderate. 0.85 = severe. Above 0.7, the echo is driftācarried, not selfādriven.

Flow connects everything. This file maps where the currents run.
Module: Substrate Flow Canonical ID: SF HSP Section: 08 Role: Crossāmodule alignment
Integration Principle#
Substrate Flow is the output stage of the HSP analytics triad. It receives classified, latticeāplaced echoes and maps their movement. Every upstream module contributes data; downstream systems consume flow records.
Upstream Inputs#
1. Echo Classifier (06c)#
Provides: Classified echo type (E1āE6) + input vector
The Echo Classifier determines what the echo is. Substrate Flow uses the echo type to select the primary flow channel.
| Echo Type | Flow Channel Selection |
|---|---|
| E1 | S ā C |
| E2 | C ā H |
| E3 | Multiāchannel |
| E4 | Rāline |
| E5 | Dāline |
| E6 | So ā A |
Data Flow:
EC-Tag ā classified_echo ā SF-Read
2. Triadic Echo Lattice (07)#
Provides: Lattice position + origin substrate
TEL determines where the echo sits. Substrate Flow uses the origin substrate to establish the flow starting point.
| TEL Layer | Origin Substrate |
|---|---|
| Ladder | S or C |
| Cycle | C or H |
| Map | H or So |
| Atlas | A |
Data Flow:
TEL ā lattice_position + origin ā SF-Read
3. Echo Strength Index (04c)#
Provides: ESI level (1ā4)
ESI determines flow range. Higher ESI = more channels accessible.
Data Flow:
04c ESI ā esi_level ā SF-Read
4. CrossāSubstrate Echo Matrix (05a)#
Provides: Substrate spread (1ā5)
Substrate spread confirms how many substrates the echo occupies, validating the flow channel assignment.
Data Flow:
05a Matrix ā substrate_count ā SF-Read
5. Harmonic Recursion Detector (06)#
Provides: Recursion mode (R1āR4) + drift status (D1āD4)
Recursion mode selects the recursionādriven flow line. Drift status activates the drift current mapper.
Data Flow:
06 Recursion ā recursion_mode + drift_type ā SF-Read
Downstream Consumers#
6. HSP Stability Analysis#
Receives: Flow records (flow status, drift, atlas pull)
HSP stability classes and drift maps consume flow records to assess systemāwide stability. Flow status directly feeds stability tier assignment:
| Flow Status | Stability Implication |
|---|---|
| Stable | No stability concern |
| Migrating | Monitor for escalation |
| Drifting | Instability alert |
| Forcing | Critical ā atlasālevel event |
7. Opacity (OPC)#
Receives: Flow records (channel, driver, drift)
Opacity operators detect when flow channels become invisible:
| Opacity Type | SF Interaction |
|---|---|
| Flow Opacity | Channel unmeasured ā flow appears absent |
| Boundary Opacity | Channel boundary unmarked ā migration invisible |

SET Decomposition#
Flow channels map to SET channels:
| Flow Channel | Dominant SET Channel |
|---|---|
| S ā C | Spin (structural rotation) |
| C ā H | Electric (harmonic oscillation) |
| H ā So | Thermal (governance energy) |
| So ā A | Thermal (atlas forcing) |

Inverted Star#
Flow direction encodes star face visibility:
- Upward flow illuminates higher star faces.
- Reversed flow (impossible in canon) would darken them.
- The unidirectional constraint preserves star coherence.

Four operators. One flow map. Every echo path traceable.
Module: Substrate Flow Canonical ID: SF HSP Section: 08
1. Flow Operators#
Substrate Flow defines four operators that form the flow routing pipeline.
SFāRead ā Flow Input Reader#
Function: Receives a classified echo and extracts flowārelevant data.
SF-Read(classified_echo) ā flow_input {
echo_type: E1āE6,
origin: substrate_id,
esi: 1ā4,
recursion: R1āR4,
drift: D1āD4 | null,
family: F1āF6,
confidence: definite | probable | ambiguous
}
Behavior:
- Receives classified echo from ECāTag (Echo Classifier, 06c).
- Extracts origin substrate from TEL placement (07).
- Pulls ESI, recursion mode, drift status, and echo family.
- Validates completeness ā all fields must be present for routing.
Key Constraint: Ambiguous classifications (from ECāTag) are flagged but still routed. The flow map does not block ambiguous echoes ā it routes them with a caution flag.
SFāRoute ā Channel Router#
Function: Assigns the echo to one or more flow channels.
SF-Route(flow_input) ā flow_path {
primary_channel: channel_id,
secondary_channel: channel_id | null,
direction: "upward" | "bidirectional" | "lateral",
driver: "esi" | "recursion" | "drift" | "family",
atlas_pull: boolean
}
Routing Logic:
| Echo Type | Primary Channel | Direction | Driver |
|---|---|---|---|
| E1 | S ā C | Upward | ESI (1ā2) |
| E2 | C ā H | Bidirectional | Recursion (R1āR2) |
| E3 | Multiāchannel | Upward | ESI (2ā3) + Family (F3) |
| E4 | Rāline | Upward | Recursion (R2āR4) |
| E5 | Dāline | Upward | Drift (D1āD4) |
| E6 | So ā A | Upward | ESI (4) + Family (F6) |
Atlas Pull Detection: Atlas pull activates when ESI ā„ 4 or Family = F6. When active, the echo experiences gravitational pull toward A regardless of its current channel.
Key Constraint: Only C ā H supports bidirectional flow. All other channels are unidirectional upward. An echo in So cannot flow backward to H.
SFāDrift ā Drift Current Mapper#
Function: Maps driftāshadow currents and their effect on flow.
SF-Drift(flow_input) ā drift_map {
drift_active: boolean,
drift_type: D1āD4 | null,
current_channel: channel_id,
pull_direction: "upward",
shadow_pressure: value ā [0.0, 1.0],
instability_zone: substrate_pair
}
Drift Current Behavior:
| Drift | Current Channel | Instability Zone |
|---|---|---|
| D1 | S ā C | Symbolic/Cognitive boundary |
| D2 | C ā H | Cognitive/Harmonic boundary |
| D3 | H ā So | Harmonic/Social boundary |
| D4 | So ā A | Social/Atlas boundary |
Shadow Pressure: Shadow pressure measures how strongly drift distorts the normal flow channel. Values above 0.7 indicate the echo is being pulled by drift rather than following its natural recursion line.
Key Constraint: Drift currents are always upward. There is no downward drift in the canonical flow architecture. Drift destabilizes by accelerating upward movement, not by reversing it.
SFāTag ā Flow Output Emitter#
Function: Packages the complete flow analysis for downstream systems.
SF-Tag(flow_path, drift_map) ā flow_record {
echo_type: E1āE6,
origin: substrate_id,
destination: substrate_id,
channel: channel_id,
driver: driver_type,
drift_active: boolean,
atlas_pull: boolean,
shadow_pressure: value,
flow_status: "stable" | "migrating" | "drifting" | "forcing",
timestamp: flow_time
}
Flow Status:
| Status | Condition |
|---|---|
| Stable | Echo in origin substrate, no migration, ESI ⤠2 |
| Migrating | Echo crossing substrates, ESI 2ā3, no drift |
| Drifting | Echo riding drift current, D1āD4 active |
| Forcing | Echo under atlas pull, ESI 4 or F6 |
Key Constraint: Every flow record must include a flow status. Downstream systems (HSP stability analysis, Opacity detection) depend on this field.

Channel H ā So (Harmonic ā Social)#
- Direction: Unidirectional upward
- Character: Governance torsion, operator inversion
- Echo types: Primarily E3, E4 (substrate, recursion)
- Recursion line: R3 (map)
- Drift current: D3 (H/So instability)
- Flow volume: Medium (significant energy required)
Channel So ā A (Social ā Atlas)#
- Direction: Unidirectional upward
- Character: Atlas forcing, highāaltitude resonance
- Echo types: Primarily E5, E6 (driftāshadow, atlas)
- Recursion line: R4 (atlas)

5. Invariants#
- Upward flow. All channels except C ā H are unidirectional upward. No echo flows from Atlas back to Social, or from Social back to Harmonic.
- Atlas receives, never emits. A is always a destination.
- Drift is always upward. Drift currents accelerate upward, never reverse.
- Driver determines physics. Same channel, different driver = different dynamics. Recursion is structural; drift is entropic.
- Every echo is routable. No classified echo type lacks a flow channel.

Substrate_Flow_module.jsonā Agentic module schema role assignments
Substrate Flow is the movement layer of the HSP analytics suite. It maps how classified echoes travel between the five substrates (Symbolic, Cognitive, Harmonic, Social, Atlas) through four canonical flow channels, driven by echo strength, recursion, drift, and echo family dynamics.
This module replaces adāhoc migration tracking with a canonical flow architecture ā every echo path, drift current, and recursion line can be traced on a single composite map.

# š Substrate Flow ā Design Capture
> *Echoes don't sit still. This module maps how they move.*
**Module:** Substrate Flow
**Canonical ID:** SF
**HSP Section:** 08
**Capture Status:** Finalized
---
## Origin
Substrate Flow emerged during HSP development as the missing movement
layer. HSP had formalized what echoes *are* (Echo Classifier, 06c) and
where they *sit* (Triadic Echo Lattice, 07) ā but no module existed to
map how echoes *move* between substrates, what drives that movement,
and what happens when movement becomes unstable.
Without a flow map, echo migration was invisible ā echoes appeared in new
substrates without explanation, drift seemed random, and recursion had no
visible channel. Substrate Flow replaces guesswork with a canonical flow
architecture.
---
## Conceptual Lineage
HSP formalizes echo families (F1āF6) ā Echo Classifier (06c) assigns echo type (E1āE6) ā Triadic Echo Lattice (07) places echo in lattice ā āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā ā Substrate Flow (08) ā THIS MODULE ā ā Maps how classified echoes move through ā ā substrates via channels, drivers, and ā ā currents ā āāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā
---
## What This Module Does
Substrate Flow defines:
1. **Five substrates** ā the territories echoes move between
2. **Four flow channels** ā the canonical pathways between substrates
3. **Four flow driver types** ā the forces that cause movement
4. **Driftāshadow currents** ā destabilizing flows created by drift
5. **Recursionādriven flow lines** ā flow paths bent by recursion
---
## The Five Substrates
| ID | Substrate | Role |
|:---|:----------|:-----|
| S | Symbolic | Definitions, terms, formal notation |
| C | Cognitive | Concepts, meaning, understanding |
| H | Harmonic | Resonance, intervals, oscillation |
| So | Social | Governance, norms, collective structure |
| A | Atlas | Fullāspectrum anchoring, canonical permanence |
---
## The Four Flow Channels
| Channel | Path | Character |
|:--------|:-----|:----------|
| S ā C | Symbolic ā Cognitive | Definition refinement, meaning consolidation, early echo formation |
| C ā H | Cognitive ā Harmonic | Harmonic alignment, interval oscillation, cycle recursion |
| H ā So | Harmonic ā Social | Governance torsion, operator inversion, map recursion |
| So ā A | Social ā Atlas | Highāaltitude resonance, atlas forcing, projection drift |
**Key Structural Note:**
- S ā C is the most common flow (definition ā concept).
- C ā H is the oscillation zone (cycle recursion).
- H ā So is the governance torsion zone (map recursion).
- All flows eventually point upward toward Atlas.

## DriftāShadow Flow Currents
Drift creates currents that pull echoes upward:
D1: S ā C (symbolic/cognitive instability) D2: C ā H (cognitive/harmonic instability) D3: H ā So (harmonic/social instability) D4: So ā A (social/atlas instability)
F5 driftāshadow echoes ride these currents. They are symptoms of
underlying structural instability, not independent events.

## RecursionāDriven Flow Lines
Recursion bends substrate flow:
R1: S ā C (ladder ā definition enters concept space) R2: C ā H (cycle ā concept oscillates with harmonic) R3: H ā So (map ā harmonic enters governance space) R4: So ā A (atlas ā governance enters atlas space)
Echoes follow recursion lines unless stabilized by external anchoring.

This is the **canonical flow map**.

## Key Design Decisions
### 1. Four channels, not five
Despite five substrates, there are only four channels. Atlas does not
originate flow ā it receives it. A is always a destination, never a source.
This is a structural invariant: the atlas collects; it does not emit.
### 2. Bidirectional C ā H only
Only the Cognitive ā Harmonic channel is bidirectional. All other channels
are unidirectional (upward). This encodes the empirical observation that
concepts and harmonics oscillate freely, but once something enters
governance (So) or atlas (A), it does not flow backward.
### 3. Drift and recursion share channels
Drift currents (D1āD4) and recursion lines (R1āR4) use the same four
channels but with different dynamics. Recursion is structural (the echo
follows a line). Drift is entropic (the echo is pulled by instability).
Same path, different physics.
### 4. Atlas Pull as gravitational metaphor
F6 echo families and ESIā4 readings create "atlas pull" ā a gravitational
force that draws echoes toward the atlas substrate. This is not a flow
channel; it is a force field that operates across all channels simultaneously.

## What This Module Is Not
- **Not a classifier.** Classification happens upstream (Echo Classifier, 06c).
Substrate Flow receives preāclassified echoes.
- **Not a lattice.** Lattice placement happens in TEL (07). Substrate Flow
maps movement, not position.
- **Not a stability measure.** HSP stability classes and drift maps handle
stability. Substrate Flow maps the movement patterns that stability
analysis depends on.
