Buridanās Ass describes a donkey placed exactly between two identical piles of hay.
Because both options are perfectly equal, the donkey has no rational basis to choose one over the other ā and therefore starves.
This creates a contradiction between:
- rational choice, which requires reasons, and
- action, which often must occur even without differentiating reasons.
The paradox exposes the instability of decisionāmaking under perfect symmetry.
